INCHEON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL 2 EXTENSION

Incheon International Airport is located in the west of Incheon city center, on an artificial land between two islands that were originally separated by a shallow sea. The combined area have become home to one of the largest and busiest airports in the world. The proposal aims to enhance the remaining part of the main terminal and concourses through sustainable principles for the future of the airport and the harmony of the existing and new facilities. The proposed extension maximizes the border towards the airside to accommodate most gates within the limited footprint while satisfying the optimal daylight and thermal environment as an eco-smart airport. The proposed design allow the main terminal check-in area and the transitional area between current and future extension of the terminal to operate efficiently while maintaining the aesthetic of the existing terminal.

The concourse module, which is a key component of this project, is developed as an environmentally responsive form and space based on the integrated data analysis. The module geometry opens to the airside to maximize the view, extends to east and west to control the heat impact, and slants toward the north to accommodate optimal northern daylight. The optimized module provides an exclusive experience not only from landside access but also from indoor departure area. The integrated design solution enables the passengers to experience a series of panoramic views both horizontally and vertically with the rhythm and directionality of module. The design proposal harmonizes both the function and form. Specifically, the connecting parts of the concourse roof geometry that changes from flat to curved folding roof and the extension of original roof materials allowed for the smooth transition from current structure to the new development.
